Over the holiday weekend I was sitting around watching Netflix, and for whatever reason the thought of how they came about sprouted into my mind, how they basically destroyed Blockbuster, and how it correlates to websites, especially online businesses.
For those of you who don’t know, Blockbuster was stubborn in their ways, refusing to adapt to the demand for online/streaming movies on demand, and now are out of business. In the early 2000’s, Blockbuster had the option of buying Netflix for $50 million, but they didn’t think there was going to be a demand for the way Netflix delivered movies. Long story short, Netflix is now valued at almost $20 billion and Blockbuster is no more.
While your aspirations may not be to get as large or as successful as these companies (realistic expectations are important), there is an important lesson to be learned from this. Stubbornness and the unwillingness to change will, in some way or another, destroy you. You always need to be ready and willing to change what you and your website has to offer your visitors based on the ever evolving demand. Things that visitors look for today are not what they were looking for 5 years ago, and it won’t be the same 5 years from now.
The internet is always changing, and with that so are people’s expectations of what they can receive from certain websites. If you do not change with the times, you will get left in the dust.
